Every year, Brazilian soccer giant Sao Paulo FC* organizes a tournament during which its 34 official soccer schools compete for the title of Brazil’s best. Having trained with them for the last 4 summers, Coquitlam Metro-Ford Barça's Hugo Vieira was invited to compete for Brazilia’s U13 team and, once his commitments with CMF’s Super-Y team were done, he traveled to Brazil and joined the squad for the week-long tournament.
Hugo's team did quite well, finishing first in their group and advancing all the way to the semi-finals, where they fell on the penalty shootout (Hugo took the last PK, down 1 goal, and scored for the tie but a teammate subsequently missed in the sudden death).
All in all, it was a great experience for the boys (as Hugo’s younger brother, Felipe, also played, on the U11 team) and it once more showed that our players can compete with the best.
* Sao Paulo FC is one of the biggest and arguably the most successful team in Brazil, holding the most national league and international titles of any Brazilian club. They are the current Serie A holders, having won the past three-in-a-row and six overall (both are records). Internationally they are sixth overall with the most international titles won by a club, tied with Juventus and Liverpool at 11.
